Why We Like It Along with the Royal Oak Offshore series from Audemars Piguet, the IWC Big Pilot’s watches have always been our favorite watch series. From when we were first getting interested in watches as the original 5002 Big Pilot’s Watch was launched, it really made an impression on us. This 5004 series Big Pilot takes the more historic and tool like aspects of the 5002 and puts them in a more buttoned up package. This was the first overhaul to the 5002 that improved both the movement and updated the aesthetics of the watch. We’ve never been huge fans of the black leather strap the 5004 came on, so putting this watch on the newer textured black leather strap from the Top Gun series makes the watch really pop. Even though the watch is 46mm, the strap comes straight down when worn, making it fit better than something with flared lugs like an Offshore. We feel everyone should consider a Big Pilot in their collection, we always have at least one in our personal collection.
Notes Watch was recently looked over by our watchmaker and had a light polish bringing it back to excellent condition. There are a few very light scratches left mostly on the case back, but did not want to over polish the watch. This Big Pilot’s Watch 500401 runs a solid +4 - +7 seconds a day on our timegrapher, see attached video. We put it on a black textured leather strap from the Big Pilot Top Gun series which is in great shape. The Top Gun strap really makes the 500401 come to life. Also comes with a pretty beat up IWC brown leather strap with two damaged rivets on the strap. An IWC travel case is also included.
