  • Zenith and Revolution have joined forces once more, unveiling the third installment in their collaborative Chronomaster Revival A3818 series. This isn't a simple re-release; it's a bold step into the realm of advanced materials. Moving beyond steel and titanium, this "Cover Girl" is entirely clad in carbon composite, creating a watch that's as light as it is striking.

The A3818, originally launched in 1971, holds a special place in El Primero history. Produced for a limited time and in small quantities, it was a variant of the tonneau-shaped A385, distinguished by its integrated ladder-style bracelet crafted by the renowned Gay Frères. The "Cover Girl" moniker was earned after its appearance on the cover of Manfred Rössler’s book, "Zenith - Swiss Watchmaking Since 1865." It’s the kind of watch that immediately excites vintage watch enthusiasts.

In 2020, Zenith and Revolution resurrected this iconic model, first in steel, followed by a titanium version in 2022. Now, commemorating Revolution’s 20th anniversary, they've taken another leap forward. The new watch retains the original 37mm case design, but renders it in incredibly lightweight carbon composite. This material is celebrated for its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, and it lends a distinctly modern aesthetic with its characteristic woven pattern. To illustrate the weight difference, the steel version weighed 110.6 grams, the titanium model 78.3 grams, and this new carbon iteration a mere 60 grams – bracelet included.

The dial, also constructed from carbon composite, faithfully features the A3818's unique "shark tooth" second track, along with both tachymeter and pulsometer scales. The pulsometer scale is designed to measure for the first 15 seconds, while the tachymeter scale takes over for the subsequent 45. Contrasting black and white subdials enhance readability, and a generous application of luminescent material ensures visibility in all lighting conditions.

Turning the watch over reveals the El Primero 400 calibre through a black PVD titanium case-back fitted with a sapphire crystal. This movement is a direct descendant of the groundbreaking 1969 El Primero, the world's first automatic high-frequency integrated chronograph movement. It beats at a rapid 5 Hz (36,000 vibrations per hour), enabling precision to one-tenth of a second. The movement consists of 326 meticulously crafted components and boasts a robust 50-hour power reserve.

Zenith’s manufacture, where this technologically advanced timepiece is made, along with their other watches, uses movements developed in-house. This tradition began with the original automatic chronograph caliber, the El Primero, in 1969. Zenith’s aim is to produce the most accurate watches, even those accurate down to 1/100th of a second! Since its founding in 1865, Zenith has been linked to those with strong character who have broken down barriers.

The Zenith Chronomaster Revival A3818 Cover Girl Carbon is offered in three distinct versions. The first, a limited edition of 150 pieces, features traditional baton hour markers on its black carbon dial. The second, limited to just 50 units, showcases Hindu-Arabic numerals. Both of these variations are accompanied by two strap options: a black "carbon-effect" Velcro strap and a black embossed "ladder-effect" calfskin strap. Quick-release spring bars allow for effortless strap changes.

The third version represents the pinnacle of exclusivity. Limited to a mere 10 pieces, it combines the baton-hour-marker dial with the iconic "Gay Frères" ladder bracelet, crafted for the very first time in carbon composite.

The black carbon case perfectly complements the overall stealthy aesthetic, creating a watch that exudes a sense of purpose. The chronograph pushers are subtly integrated, and the crown is proportioned for ease of use. The design successfully merges modern sensibilities with a respectful nod to its heritage.

The "shark tooth" second track is a defining element, adding a touch of vintage charm. The combination of tachymeter and pulsometer scales serves as a functional reminder of the watch's racing chronograph lineage.

At the heart of the watch lies the El Primero 400 movement, a true powerhouse. Its high frequency allows for incredibly precise time measurement, and the column-wheel chronograph mechanism ensures smooth and reliable operation. The 50-hour power reserve provides ample autonomy, allowing the watch to remain running even after a weekend off the wrist.

The oscillating weight is adorned with "Côtes de Genève," a classic watchmaking finishing touch. This detail underscores Zenith's unwavering commitment to quality and craftsmanship. The movement is not merely a functional component; it's a testament to horological artistry.

Wei Koh, founder of Revolution Magazine, describes the collaboration as, “…the incredible pleasure of presenting the first ever CHRONOMASTER Revival A3818 Cover Girl Carbon’ reimagined in a full carbon fiber construction, a material that embodies strength, lightness, and modernity. It’s our passionate tribute to one of the rarest El Primero watches. In today’s market, we wanted this collaboration to deliver more than just aesthetic appeal. It had to offer true revolutionary quality and value to collectors. The legendary ‘Cover Girl’, elevated with cutting edge carbon fibre, presents just that.”

Revolution Magazine, celebrating two decades in the industry, also created one of the three watch variations with a Hindu-Arabic dial to commemorate their latest undertaking, Revolution Arabia.

Romain Marietta, Chief Products Officer of Zenith Watches, shared his perspective, stating, “This is the ultimate “Cover Girl” you’ll want to call your own, a perfect fusion of vintage 1970s charm and cutting-edge futuristic design, wrapped in a striking carbon jacket.”

“Our journey began with a tribute to the original steel “Cover Girl,” but over the years, our collaborations with our friends at Revolution have continually redefined the limits of lightness and innovation.”

"These editions embody the shared ethos of ZENITH and Revolution: a passion for watches, a profound respect for their heritage, and a commitment to propelling them into the future.”

“Here’s to 20 incredible years of Revolution and 160 remarkable years of ZENITH—cheers to many more milestones ahead!”

The selection of carbon composite extends beyond visual appeal; it's fundamentally about performance. This material is exceptionally strong and lightweight, ensuring the watch is comfortable to wear, even during vigorous activity. Its resistance to scratches and dings means this isn't a watch that requires delicate handling.

The use of carbon fiber extends to the dial, creating a cohesive and unified aesthetic. The subtle weave pattern of the carbon adds depth and texture, resulting in a visual experience that is both technically impressive and aesthetically satisfying.

The ladder bracelet, a hallmark of the original A3818, is reimagined in carbon composite for the most exclusive version of the watch. This represents a first for Zenith, and it highlights their dedication to pushing boundaries. The bracelet is not only remarkably lightweight but also visually captivating, with its distinctive open-worked design.

The Zenith x Revolution Cover Girl Carbon transcends mere nostalgia. It's a contemporary watch with a vintage heart. It appeals to those who appreciate history but embrace technological advancements. It's for individuals who value both performance and style in equal measure.

This watch is a natural conversation starter. It's a piece that commands attention, not through ostentation, but through its unique character. It's a watch that tells a story – a narrative of collaboration, innovation, and a profound respect for horological heritage.

The fusion of the vintage-inspired design with the high-tech carbon composite case creates a captivating juxtaposition. The watch feels simultaneously familiar and groundbreaking, a harmonious blend of classic charm and cutting-edge technology.

Subtle details, such as the red chronograph seconds hand and the luminescent markers, further enhance the watch's appeal. These are the nuanced touches that elevate a watch from good to exceptional.

Powering this exceptional timepiece is the self-winding El Primero caliber 400, boasting a 50-hour power reserve. It performs the essential functions of hours, minutes, and small seconds, alongside a chronograph and date complication. The 37mm case, crafted from high-modulus carbon fiber, ensures water resistance to 50 meters. The matte black carbon fiber dial features a distinctive "shark tooth" chronograph scale, with applied Super-LumiNova enhancing legibility on the hands, indices, and chronograph scale markings.
