  • Perrelet introduces a fresh take on its kinetic watchmaking prowess with the launch of the Turbine Chrono NEO collection. This series represents an evolution of the brand's distinctive Turbine design, now integrated with chronograph functionality and presented in a contemporary package geared towards action and everyday style. The collection comprises three variations, each defined by a vibrant sub-dial color accent, offering options for individuals seeking a watch that combines mechanical intrigue with practical sports timing features. These timepieces are engineered for performance, incorporating modern materials and a refined aesthetic suitable for both athletic pursuits and casual wear scenarios.

The Perrelet name carries a significant weight in horological history, primarily linked to Abraham-Louis Perrelet, often credited with pioneering work on the automatic winding mechanism in the late 18th century. While the direct lineage can be debated, the modern Perrelet brand embraces this spirit of invention, particularly through its development of unique complications. Since its relaunch, the brand has carved a niche for itself with visually engaging mechanisms, the most prominent being the Turbine technology introduced in 2009. This patented system has become the cornerstone of Perrelet's identity, showcasing a commitment to blending traditional Swiss watchmaking techniques with novel kinetic displays that captivate the wearer.

At the heart of many modern Perrelet watches lies the signature Turbine technology. This feature consists of a dial-side rotor, typically fashioned with 12 blades, crafted from lightweight materials like anodized aluminum. This upper turbine is designed to spin freely with the slightest movement of the wearer's wrist, creating a mesmerizing optical effect. Underneath this spinning element sits a fixed sub-dial, often decorated with patterns or colors that are revealed and concealed as the turbine rotates. This patented mechanism, first unveiled in 2009, provides a dynamic, three-dimensional quality to the watch face, setting Perrelet timepieces apart with a unique and instantly recognizable visual signature.

The Turbine Chrono NEO collection builds upon this foundation, introducing several key updates that define its "NEO" designation. It represents a refinement of the Turbine Chrono concept, aiming for enhanced wearability and functionality. A significant change is the move away from traditional chronograph sub-dials for elapsed minutes and seconds. Instead, Perrelet employs central hands for both the chrono seconds and the 60-minute counter, promoting quicker and more intuitive reading of measured time. This functional upgrade is paired with the adoption of modern materials, specifically Grade 2 titanium for the case and bracelet, and a reduction in case diameter compared to earlier Turbine Chrono models, enhancing comfort for a wider range of users.

The case construction of the Turbine Chrono NEO reflects a focus on modern materials and ergonomic design. Fashioned from Grade 2 titanium, the case measures 42mm in diameter, a reduction from the 47mm of some predecessors, making it more accessible and comfortable for daily wear. Titanium offers the dual benefits of being significantly lighter than steel while also providing excellent resistance to corrosion and scratches. The case features a combination of polished and brushed surfaces, adding visual depth and texture. This case design draws inspiration from the Turbine EVO line, which itself marked a renewal for the collection upon the 10th anniversary of the Turbine technology in 2019.

Further examining the case reveals thoughtful design details. The case middle is distinguished by wide, vertically oriented grooves, a textural element that adds a rugged, technical feel to the watch's profile. This fluting motif is echoed on the black DLC-coated crown located at the traditional 3 o'clock position. The crown is generously sized for easy grip and operation, and features a laser-engraved "P" logo, subtly branding the piece. The overall architecture balances robust construction with refined finishing touches, contributing to the watch's sporty yet sophisticated character.

Complementing the case is a fixed bezel, also crafted from titanium but treated with a durable black Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coating. This coating enhances scratch resistance and provides a strong visual contrast against the brushed and polished titanium of the case body. The bezel incorporates a tachymeter scale, a classic chronograph feature used for measuring speed over a known distance, reinforcing the watch's connection to motorsports and performance timing. Flanking the crown at the 2 and 4 o'clock positions are the chronograph pushers. These components are rendered in black DLC-coated titanium, shaped like compact parallelepipeds with distinct bevelled edges and a mix of satin-finished sides and polished top surfaces, ensuring both tactile feedback and aesthetic coherence.

Ensuring durability and clarity, the Turbine Chrono NEO is equipped with sapphire crystals on both the front and back. The crystal covering the dial features a double anti-reflective coating, minimizing glare and maximizing legibility of the complex dial structure under various lighting conditions. The case back is secured via screws and incorporates a sapphire crystal porthole, offering an exhibition view of the automatic movement within. The watch is rated for water resistance up to 5 atmospheres, equivalent to 50 meters or 164 feet, making it suitable for surface swimming and exposure to rain, though not intended for diving.

The dial is arguably the most captivating aspect of the Turbine Chrono NEO. Dominating the view is the signature 12-blade turbine, crafted from black anodized aluminum. This element is not merely decorative; it's a functional rotor, fitted with five tungsten counterweights on its underside to enhance its sensitivity to motion. As the wearer moves their wrist, the turbine spins rapidly, creating a dynamic visual spectacle unique to Perrelet. This constant motion adds an engaging, almost living quality to the watch face.

Beneath the spinning turbine lies the lower dial, which serves as the canvas revealed by the kinetic upper element. This sub-dial is decorated with a distinct propeller-inspired motif, tying into the aviation and mechanical themes often associated with the Turbine collection. The Turbine Chrono NEO is offered in three distinct colorways, differentiated by the color treatment of this lower dial: a vibrant Electric Blue (Ref. A4072/1), a striking Grass Green (Ref. A4072/2), and a more understated Light Grey (Ref. A4072/3). These color accents provide the primary visual identity for each reference.

Perrelet prioritized immediate readability for the chronograph functions in the NEO design. Instead of using small sub-dials, which can sometimes be difficult to read at a glance, elapsed time is tracked using two central hands. A slim central seconds hand sweeps around the dial when the chronograph is activated; its tip is colored to match the sub-dial accent (blue or green) or rendered in contrasting red for the light grey model for enhanced visibility. More unconventionally, a second, bolder central hand tracks the elapsed minutes up to 60. This minute counter hand features a prominent triangular tip filled with Super-LumiNova®, ensuring it stands out clearly against the dial background for quick reading of measured minutes.

Readability extends to the primary time display as well. The hour track features a black sandblasted finish, providing a textured backdrop. Time is indicated by a mix of applied Arabic numerals at the even hours (12, 2, 4, 8, 10) set against a grey background segment, and prominent indices for the odd hours. Both the numerals and indices are executed in relief and generously filled with Super-LumiNova® for excellent low-light visibility. The main hour and minute hands are baton-style with grey profiles and also feature Super-LumiNova® inserts. A dedicated minute flange, positioned around the periphery of the main dial, allows for precise reading of the chronograph minutes, marked with indices in a 5-minute scale and highlighted by a colored plate near 12 o'clock bearing the inscription 'MIN'. A date window is neatly integrated at the 6 o'clock position.

Driving the Turbine Chrono NEO is the Perrelet Calibre P-361, a self-winding mechanical movement engineered for reliability and precision. Comprising 175 individual components and incorporating 41 jewels to minimize friction at key points, this movement operates at a standard frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz). This beat rate contributes to the smooth sweep of the seconds hand and supports accurate timekeeping. The movement provides essential timekeeping functions – hours, minutes, and central seconds – alongside the central-hand chronograph complication (60 seconds and 60 minutes) and a date display.

The Calibre P-361 is built with robustness in mind. It features the Incabloc® shock absorption system for the balance wheel, a widely respected and effective technology designed to protect the delicate regulating organ from damage due to accidental impacts or drops. When fully wound, the movement offers a power reserve of approximately 42 hours, a standard duration for contemporary automatic movements, ensuring the watch will continue running for nearly two days off the wrist without needing to be wound or worn.

Through the exhibition case-back, the meticulous finishing of the Calibre P-361 is visible. The mainplate and bridges are rhodium-plated for durability and aesthetic appeal, decorated with a circular graining (perlage) finish. The oscillating weight, responsible for automatically winding the mainspring via wrist movement, is openworked to provide a better view of the components beneath. It is also rhodium-plated, embellished with the classic Côtes de Genève striping pattern, and bears the engraved Perrelet logo. This rotor is mounted on efficient ball bearings to ensure smooth and effective winding with minimal friction.

Enhancing the watch's versatility and contemporary appeal is the bracelet and strap system. The Turbine Chrono NEO comes standard on a five-row bracelet crafted entirely from Grade 2 titanium, matching the case material. The links feature a sophisticated interplay of polished central rows flanked by satin-brushed outer rows, creating visual interest and complementing the case finish. This bracelet secures to the wrist with a butterfly folding clasp, which integrates neatly into the bracelet's flow and uses side pushers for release, ensuring a secure and comfortable fit.

Recognizing the desire for different looks and functionalities, Perrelet includes an additional strap with each Turbine Chrono NEO. This secondary strap is made from durable rubber and is color-coordinated with the watch's specific sub-dial accent – electric blue rubber for the blue model, grass green for the green variant, and black rubber for the light grey version. A key feature is the integrated "quick release" system. Spring bars with small levers allow the wearer to easily detach the bracelet or strap from the lugs and swap between them in seconds, without requiring any special tools or a visit to a watchmaker. This significantly enhances the watch's adaptability to different occasions or preferences.

The Electric Blue version (Ref. A4072/1) leverages the vibrancy of its namesake color. The electric blue propeller motif on the sub-dial provides flashes of bright color as the turbine spins. This color is mirrored in the tip of the central chronograph seconds hand and the profile of the central minute counter hand. Paired with the titanium bracelet, it offers a sporty yet refined look, while the matching blue rubber strap leans into a more casual, performance-oriented aesthetic. It's designed for those who appreciate a dynamic dial and a splash of bold color.

For those preferring a bolder, more verdant statement, the Grass Green model (Ref. A4072/2) offers a compelling option. The bright green sub-dial decoration and matching accents on the chronograph hands create a strong contrast against the black turbine and dial elements. This version merges a distinct design language with the inherent sportiness of the chronograph function. The combination of lightweight titanium and the energetic green hue results in a watch that feels both modern and adventurous, easily transitioning between the supplied titanium bracelet and the coordinating green rubber strap.

The Light Grey variant (Ref. A4072/3) presents a more restrained and technical interpretation of the Turbine Chrono NEO design. The light grey sub-dial offers a subtle backdrop for the spinning turbine. To ensure chronograph readability isn't compromised by the muted tones, Perrelet uses striking red for the tip of the central seconds hand and the profile of the central minute counter hand. This touch of red provides excellent contrast and a sporty visual cue. This version, paired with either the titanium bracelet or the included black rubber strap, offers a sophisticated take on the Turbine concept, suitable for those who favor technical aesthetics with understated color.
