To fully appreciate the significance of the LW.01, we need to delve into the history of MING Watches. MING, a relatively young brand in the vast expanse of horology, has quickly made its mark, renowned for its unique designs, exceptional craftsmanship, and audacious experiments.
Creating the world's lightest watch wasn't a whimsical endeavor. It arose from a genuine thirst for challenge. MING wanted to eclipse what had previously been achieved, without sacrificing practicality, wearability, or the intrinsic tactile qualities of metal.
The journey was intense. It demanded exploration into the realms of metallurgy, in-depth material studies, and countless hours of testing. By reimagining case construction and other components, MING achieved an impressive feat in minimizing metal usage while maximizing rigidity.
The LW.01's design is a masterclass in innovation. With no conventional dial, the movement holder doubles up as the outer ring, cleverly occluding the central movement portion with a gradient print on the outer crystal. The case, despite being slim, is internally hollowed for further weight reduction.
Perhaps the most fascinating choice was the material: the AZ31 Magnesium-Aluminium-Zinc-Manganese alloy. Lighter than carbon and superior in consistency to hollow 3D printing, this alloy, coupled with treatments like plasma-electrolytic oxidation, ensures the watch remains resilient.
The incorporation of Corning
Gorilla Glass 6, as opposed to traditional sapphire, contributes to the lightness. Every element, including the screws and the bezel, is meticulously optimized for durability and weight. Even the crown is crafted from anodised aluminium, underscoring the lengths MING went to strike the perfect balance between weight and resilience.

Despite its modernity, the LW.01 doesn't forget its roots. Elements like the pulse seconds disc, the shuriken hour hand, and the gradient and skeleton peripheral ring on the crystal subtly pay homage to MING's earlier creations.
The creation of the LW.01 wasn't a solo act. MING collaborated with a plethora of experts, from Reto Helfenstein, known for his prowess with similar materials for aerospace, to Manufacture Jean-Rousseau for the featherweight Alcantara straps. Manufacture Schwarz-Etienne modified the ETA2000 to achieve further weight reduction while maintaining reliability.
