HAUTLENCE, established in 2004, has consistently challenged the norms of traditional watchmaking. The very name, an anagram of Neuchâtel, the cradle of Swiss watchmaking, speaks to the brand’s dedication to both honoring and reimagining the craft.
Hautlence doesn't just create timepieces; they craft mechanical expressions that resonate with a dynamic spirit. The Linear Series 3 Red Passion is a continuation, a vivid embodiment, of that very philosophy. In 2022, HAUTLENCE experienced a refreshed sense of direction, while continuing its mission and core values. Teaming up with MELB Holding, an independent family watchmaking group, has increased the brand's strategic position and access to growing synergies.
The Linear Series 3 Red Passion immediately declares its presence. The vibrant red that envelops the watch is not merely a color choice; it is a statement of intent. HAUTLENCE uses color strategically, drawing a parallel to the use of red by Renaissance artists who employed the hue to infuse their works with depth and emotion. Similarly, the automotive industry often uses the color red to display passion, boldness, and performance. This particular shade of red emphasizes the bold lines and unique architecture of the Linear Series 3.

The dial of the Linear Series 3 is a multi-layered composition, consistent with HAUTLENCE’s approach to depth and transparency. A tinted sapphire dial, bearing the minute numerals, overlays a base dial finished with a vertical satin texture and a red Zapon lacquer. This layered construction creates a captivating visual effect, drawing the eye to the core mechanical elements that are deliberately revealed. The main dial is partially open, allowing a glimpse of the intricate movement within. One of the showcased components is the minute cam. This part is integral with the minute hand.
A defining feature of the Linear Series 3 is its linear retrograde jumping hour display. Located on the left side of the dial, a graduated scale, reminiscent of precision measuring tools, tracks the hours. A slender linkage, referencing the original calibre HL developed by HAUTLENCE in 2004, features a small pointer that indicates the current hour. Once the pointer reaches the 12 numeral, a fascinating mechanical sequence unfolds. A snail disengages a probe, releasing accumulated energy. This action causes the linkage to jump back to the 1 numeral, initiating the next cycle. This retrograde function is not just a technical feat; it is a kinetic spectacle.

Complementing the linear hour display is the flying tourbillon situated at 6 o'clock. Visible through a black skeletonized bridge, the tourbillon’s continuous rotation is a visual delight, a constant reminder of the mechanical precision at the heart of the watch. The tourbillon, a hallmark of haute horlogerie, serves to counteract the effects of gravity on the watch’s accuracy, demonstrating HAUTLENCE’s commitment to both form and function.
The case of the Linear Series 3 is constructed from steel, providing robust protection and a modern aesthetic. The case measures 43.0 x 50.8 x 12.2 mm, with a reduced thickness of 10.9 mm without the sapphire crystal. With its dimensions the watch has a powerful looking presence on the wrist. The sides of the case feature textured reliefs that add a sense of dynamism and volume. The notched crown, adorned with a red rubber band, mirrors the vibrant color of the strap and reinforces the watch's bold color scheme. The watch maintains a water resistance rating of 10 ATM, demonstrating it's durability for active use.

Powering the Linear Series 3 is the calibre D50, a self-winding movement entirely developed, designed, and produced in-house by HAUTLENCE. This movement benefits from a module created in partnership with Agenhor, a specialist in complex watch movements. Comprising 239 components, the D50 calibre oscillates at a frequency of 3 Hertz (21,600 vibrations per hour) and boasts a substantial 72-hour power reserve. The oscillating weight, visible through the case back, is finely chased and recalls the brand’s signature Möbius motif. The caliber D50 has a double hairspring, which improves the accuracy and precision of the watch.
The case back, crafted from sapphire crystal, is etched with the inscriptions "HAUTLENCE," "10 ATM," and "Suisse," affirming the watch’s origins and capabilities. The beveled, extra-hard rectangular sapphire crystal covering the dial is treated with an anti-reflective coating, ensuring optimal legibility.

The Linear Series 3 is presented on a vibrant red rubber strap, perfectly complementing the watch’s overall aesthetic. The strap is secured with a steel pin buckle, providing both comfort and security. The red rubber strap really helps set off the bold design of the watch. The comfort and flexibilty of the strap makes the watch ideal for daily wear.
The partially visible mechanics of the watch create a visual treat for any watch collector. The design choice enhances the watch's appeal and adds to its unique charm. From the side, the watch showcases a thoughtful and functional structure, while the back reveals the intricate inner workings and precise engineering of the watch.

HAUTLENCE’s approach to watchmaking can be described as a fusion of innovative mechanics and a universe drawn from various artistic disciplines, including design and architecture. This philosophy is evident in the Linear Series 3, which reinterprets the traditional display of time, emphasizing both spatial and temporal dimensions. The brand's emphasis on a functional relationship with beauty results in timepieces that are both visually striking and mechanically sophisticated.
