The Ball x CronotempVs Collectors Engineer III ooBLU watch emerges as a meticulously crafted timepiece, born from a collaboration steeped in horological history and a shared passion for precision. This limited edition piece, a follow-up to the successful 00RED model, showcases Ball's commitment to robust engineering and CronotempVs Collectors' keen eye for detail, resulting in a watch that is as functional as it is visually striking.
The legacy of Ball Watch Company is deeply intertwined with the development of American railroads. In the late 19th century, following a catastrophic train collision attributed to timekeeping discrepancies, Webb C. Ball was appointed as Chief Time Inspector. His mandate was clear: to establish stringent timekeeping standards across the railway system. Ball's rigorous system of watch inspections and his unwavering focus on accuracy not only revolutionized railroad safety but also laid the groundwork for the modern chronometry standards we know today. The 00BLU pays a direct homage to this history, embodying the spirit of precision and reliability that defined Ball's early contributions.

CronotempVs Collectors, a community of dedicated watch enthusiasts with members spanning across the globe, brings a collector's perspective to this partnership. This isn't their first collaboration with Ball, and their experience is evident in the nuanced design choices of the 00BLU. Having produced numerous projects and editions, totaling over 1,200 watches, CronotempVs Collectors understand what resonates with discerning collectors. Their input ensures that the 00BLU isn't just another timepiece; it's a piece with a story, designed with an understanding of what makes a watch truly special.
The 00BLU is unabashedly a "tool watch." It's not about superfluous embellishments or intricate complications. Its purpose is singular: to provide accurate timekeeping in any condition. This focus on functionality is reflected in every aspect of its design, from the robust case to the highly legible dial. It is a piece for individuals who value precision and dependability above all else.
One of the defining features of the 00BLU is its use of tritium micro gas tubes. These tubes, a signature of Ball watches, provide unparalleled luminosity in low-light conditions. Unlike conventional luminous materials that require charging from an external light source, tritium tubes glow continuously for years, without any degradation in brightness. The 00BLU utilizes 33 of these tubes, strategically placed on the hands and dial, ensuring exceptional readability in complete darkness. The use of blue and white tubes adds a distinctive visual touch, colors that are notoriously difficult to achieve with traditional luminous substances.

The case of the 00BLU is constructed from 904L stainless steel, a material renowned for its exceptional corrosion resistance. This grade of steel, often used in the aerospace and chemical industries, contains higher levels of chromium, molybdenum, nickel, and copper than standard 316L stainless steel. This composition makes it remarkably durable and resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in harsh environments. The polished finish of the 904L steel adds a subtle touch of sophistication, while its robust nature ensures the watch can withstand the rigors of daily wear.
The 00BLU measures 40mm in diameter and 13.15mm thick, which is a great wearable size for most. This is a versatile size that strikes a balance between presence and comfort. It's large enough to have a noticeable presence on the wrist, without being overly bulky or cumbersome. The 20mm lug width also allows for a wide variety of strap options, should the owner wish to personalize the watch. The watch weighs in at approximately 165 grams, giving it a solid and substantial feel.
Magnetic fields can wreak havoc on the accuracy of a mechanical watch. To combat this, the 00BLU incorporates a mu-metal shield that surrounds the movement. Mu-metal is a specialized alloy with exceptionally high magnetic permeability. This means it effectively attracts and deflects magnetic field lines, shielding the delicate inner workings of the watch from their disruptive influence. This anti-magnetic protection is rated up to 1,000 Gauss (80,000 A/m), a level far exceeding that of most everyday watches.

Ball's commitment to durability extends to shock resistance as well. The 00BLU is tested to withstand shocks up to 5,000Gs, adhering to the ISO 1413 standard. This involves subjecting the watch to a series of controlled impacts, simulating real-world scenarios. Additionally, the watch features Ball's patented Amortiser® anti-shock system. This system further protects the movement from sudden impacts, enhancing the watch's overall resilience.
The heart of the 00BLU is the automatic caliber BALL RR1103-C. This movement is not just any automatic caliber; it's a chronometer certified by the Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres (COSC). This certification is a guarantee of precision, signifying that the movement has undergone rigorous testing and meets stringent accuracy standards. A COSC-certified movement is expected to maintain an average daily rate of -4/+6 seconds, ensuring reliable timekeeping.
The dial of the 00BLU is a study in legibility. The grey background provides a muted backdrop for the bold, applied hour markers and hands. The numerals at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock are prominent and easy to read, while the remaining hour markers are simple batons. The hands are similarly straightforward, with a clear distinction between the hour, minute, and second hands.
The dial features a unique detail that sets it apart: the use of two blue tritium tubes to mark the 12 o'clock position, replacing the traditional "12" numeral. This design choice, a nod to the concept of "zero hour" or midnight, cleverly highlights the watch's exceptional low-light visibility. The blue and white tritium tubes create a visually striking contrast against the grey dial, further enhancing readability.

The 00BLU is equipped with a 904L stainless steel bracelet that complements the robust nature of the case. The bracelet features a folding buckle, providing a secure and comfortable fit. The 904L steel construction ensures that the bracelet is as durable and corrosion-resistant as the case itself, making it well-suited for daily wear. The links give it a tool/sporty watch style.
An anti-reflective sapphire crystal protects the dial. Sapphire crystal is exceptionally scratch-resistant, ensuring that the dial remains clear and legible even after years of use. The anti-reflective coating minimizes glare, further enhancing readability in bright conditions. A screw-in crown aids the 100 meter water resistance.
Patrick's Labs has also had a hand in developing this watch. Patrick's Labs is Ball Watch Company's research and development center, and their knowledge and experitse is at the forefront of innovation with groundbreaking products and solutions.
