The watch features a robust 42 mm Oyster case crafted from 18 kt yellow gold. The fluted bezel, a Rolex hallmark, rotates bidirectionally and is part of the watch's ingenious Ring Command system. This system allows the wearer to easily set the watch's various functions, including the local time, reference time, and annual calendar. The screw-down crown and Twinlock double waterproofness system ensure the watch remains water-resistant to a depth of 100 meters (330 feet).

Protected by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with a cyclops magnifier for the date, the Sky-Dweller's bright black dial offers excellent legibility. Central hands for hours, minutes, and seconds track the local time, while a 24-hour disc with a red triangular indicator displays the reference time. A prominent feature of the dial is the annual calendar display. rolex's ingenious complication consists of 12 apertures around the dial's circumference, each with a different month label. A small red rectangle highlights the current month. The date, displayed at the 3 o'clock position, automatically changes with the local time. The Sky-Dweller is powered by the Rolex Calibre 9002, a self-winding mechanical movement with a 72-hour power reserve.
