The watch features a robust Oyster case, measuring 40 mm in diameter, crafted from 18 kt yellow gold. The case is resistant to water up to a depth of 100 meters (330 feet), thanks to its screw-down case back and crown. The screw-down crown utilizes Rolex's Triplock triple waterproofness system. A scratch-resistant sapphire crystal protects the watch face.

The GMT-Master II features a black dial with Chromalight display, which offers exceptional legibility in all conditions, including darkness. The broad hands and hour markers on the dial are filled with a luminescent material that emits a long-lasting blue glow. The watch is equipped with a bidirectional rotatable 24-hour graduated bezel. The bezel insert is crafted from black and grey ceramic Cerachrom, a virtually scratch and corrosion-resistant material. The bezel can be used to track a second time zone.
