Unlike its automatic counterparts, the 17’’’ SAV PS requires the wearer to wind the crown periodically to maintain its operation. The act of winding the crown winds the mainspring within the movement, storing potential energy that slowly unwinds over time, powering the watch's functions. The 17’’’ SAV PS caliber achieves a power reserve of 50 hours minimum when fully wound, meaning the watch will continue to run for at least that amount of time after it has been removed from the wearer's pocket and stationary.

The 17’’’ SAV PS caliber is 38.65 millimeters in diameter and 3.8 millimeters thick. It contains 137 individual parts, including 7 bridges. These bridges provide structural support for the movement's going train, the series of gears that transmit power from the mainspring to the escapement and ultimately the hands of the watch. The caliber 17’’’ SAV PS also features 18 jewels. Jewels are placed at friction points within the movement to reduce wear and tear. Over time, unjeweled bearings can develop friction as the components rub against each other.
