Its 42 mm diameter case is crafted from stainless steel, accented by an 18k red gold unidirectional ratcheted bezel, used for measuring elapsed time. The watch features a screw-locked crown with two gaskets, ensuring water resistance to a depth of 300 meters (1,000 feet). A cambered sapphire crystal, glareproofed on both sides, protects the black dial. The dial houses luminescent hands and indexes for optimal readability in low-light conditions.

Powering the Superocean Automatic 42 is the Breitling 17, a self-winding mechanical movement with a power reserve of approximately 38 hours.
